Tobacco Assignment:Cost factors of quitting:When smoking cigarettes one of the hardest things to deal with is quitting. Although it is hard, it is very possible. Due to the fact that smoking is a very costly habit, it may be wise to reconsider what you are doing to yourself and the people around you. Although it is addicting, addictions can be broken. Think of how much money you spend each day on cigarettes. Then think of how much you spend on them per year! Imagine how much money you could save by not polluting your insides with this unnecessary smoke. As a way to look into your future, multiply the amount you spent in one year by ten! This will give you an estimate of how much you will spend in the next ten years on cigarettes. Just think, you could travel the world, or take your family on a memorable vacation with all the money you could save by stopping smoking.Social Acceptance:Throughout the time of smoking, its views have been noticeable negative as the years have proceeded. Now a days, if you are considered a smoker you have less of a chance of getting a job at businesses because it costs the employer more money on insurance, smoking causes a distinctive odor to cling to drapes, and other fabrics, and it is said that smoking causes you to be sick more often, therefore your employer will have to spend an extra amount of money trying to hire someone to fill for you one those days that you are absent. Although it is easy to find a place to suck down a cowboy killer, in the future this may not be the case. Over the past couple years, smoking has been restricted to limited places. Now a days, many restaurants and other public places are banning smoking. Also friends and family are not permitting their friends and family to smoke cigarettes inside or out. In my opinion, smoking was once viewed as being "cool" but over the past couple years, the views have gone from positive to negative in a short period of time.Health to others:One of the worst things that occurs from smoking is the effects of second hand smoke. This is when people in your community are smoking, they blow their drag out and you coincidently inhale it. Although you are not exactly putting a cigarette to your mouth, the effects of second hand smoke are known to kill many people each year. It can cause lung cancer as well as heart disease. Another negative aspect of smoking is that when family mothers and mothers smoke, it can cause asthma and heavy breathing to babies. Smoking is also linked to SIDS which is sudden infant death syndrome. When you are a child and are being raised in a smoking environment, it is said that you are at more of a risk to get ear infections, colds, bronchitis, and other things that are related to your breathing.Setting Examples: When becoming a smoker one thing that you need to consider is the effects it may have on your family. Although when "acting" like a parent, you tell you children that it is not good to smoke and it is bad for you, what you as the parent are saying is that its bad, but it is ok to do it anyway. Although it is quiet obvious that it is hard to quite, showing a bad example toward your children is one of the worst things you can do as a parent. It is showing your children that it is ok to smoke even though it damages your body.

Nicotine, is a chemical that naturally occurs in tobacco. Nicotine is named after Jean Nicot, who valued the medicinal properties of the herb and sent some to Queen Catherine de Medicis of France, to help cure her son's headaches. The treatment was successful and in homage tobacco was called Nicotania Tabacum, hence nicotine. But all history aside, nicotine is as addictive as heroin or cocaine, is not more so (and certainly easier to obtain). A person can be physically and psychologically addicted to nicotine.Nicotine creates a pleasant and calming affect that makes one want to smoke more. It interferes with the nerve system, slowing the flow of information between cells. Eventually, the smoker will up the amount tobacco smoked, increasing nicotine levels in the bloodstream. The body builds up a tolerant (as with most drugs) so the smoker will increase it's tobacco use even more. In time, a certain level of nicotine is reach and the addict will keep using tobacco to maintain that level. Nicotine reaches the system faster than drugs that are injected intravenously.WHen the smoke is inhaled, the nicotine enters the lungs and is absorbed into the bloodstream. It can affect the heart, the blood vessels, the hormonal system, your metabolism and the brain. Nicotine can also be found in breast milk and the cervical mucous of smokers (which is why a woman should not smoke while nursing!) If you smoke while pregnant, the nicotine enters the placenta and can be found in amniotic fluid and umbilical cord blood of newborns. The nicotine can cause birth defects, so it is beneficial to not smoke while pregnant.Several factors related to Nicotine affect the metabolism and excretion systems. A smoker can have nicotine in their body three to four days after quitting.Sources-http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp

FACTSSmokeless tobacco is known as oral, snuff, chewing, snuff and spit tobacco. There are carcinogens, (cancer causing), and causes cancer in the mouth, and in the pancreas, with many other health problems. You can get gum disease, destruction of bone sockets around the teeth, and tooth loss, sometimes if you use it enough, you get bad breath, and your teeth get stained yellow. Snuff (dip, pinch) and is put between the gum and the cheek. If you have dry snuff, you can sniff or inhale it up your nose. Chewing loos leaves, plugs or twists, get absorbed into the saliva, and you get the nicotine that way.RISKSThere are multiple risks to smokeless tobacco. You can get oral cancer, pancreatic caner (which attacks your pancreas), addiction to nicotine, leukoplakia (white cancerous sores in the mouth), bone loss, and gum recession (peeling back of gums).WHO USES IT?The Center for Disease Control and Prevention showed that adults, 18 and up, percentage of men who use it is 6%, and the percentage of women who use it is 1%. There are recent surveys though that 14% of high school boys and 2% of high school girls use chewing tobacco. The survey said that 2.9% of middle school students had used it within the past two days of taking that survey. There are many major league baseball players that use smokeless tobacco. Smokers who use smokeless tobacco instead of cigarettes still have a chance of getting lung cancer because the nicotine and tobacco still effect your lungs.http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Quitting_Smokeless_Tobacco.asp?sitearea=&level=

as you can see from reading this i do not agree with there information
Why Quit?
stated by the website provided smokeing can cause many health risk, i do not know what to beleive because there are no specifics for what can go wrong for different things that are being smoked. the site dose not tell if it is talking about ciggerets or cigars or other forms of smokeing products. it states that smokeing also causes other things including cancer of the mouth, voice box (larynx), throat (pharynx), esophagus, bladder, kidney, pancreas, cervix, stomach, and some leukemias. once again it dosnt state what the research was done on. smokeing is said to cause premature wrinkling of the skin, bad breath, bad smelling clothing, and bad smelling hair. this is opinionated because some people enjoy the smell of smoke. it is also said to be the most common cause of blindness in the elderly. it is also said that smokers are twice as likly to die of a heart attack. Women over 35 who smoke and use birth control pills are in a high-risk group for heart attack, stroke, and blood clots of the legs. Based on data collected in the late 1990s, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimated that adult male smokers lost an average of 13.2 years of life and female smokers lost 14.5 years of life because of smoking, smokeing what we do not know because the website dose not state what the person was smokeing. no matter how long you smoke for if you stop smokeing then you will increase your health. these are quoted things from the site that will happen if you quit
Quitting smoking has major and immediate health benefits for men and women of all ages. Benefits apply to people with and without smoking-related disease.Former smokers live longer than continuing smokers.Quitting smoking decreases the risk of lung cancer, other cancers, heart attack, stroke, and chronic lung disease.Women who stop smoking before pregnancy or during the first 3 to 4 months of pregnancy reduce their risk of having a low birth weight baby to that of women who never smoked. The health benefits of quitting smoking far exceed any risks from the less than 10 pound weight gain or any adverse psychological effects that may follow quitting.
What Are the Benefits Over Time?

Tobacco:Help with Physical Addictions One of the main ways to get rid of physical addiction to smoking is Nicotine Replacement Therapy(NRT). NRT is gives you nicotine without many of the other harmful things in cigarettes. This helps get rid of some of the cravings to smoke which 70-90% of smokers say are the reason that they can't quit. Some forms of NRT are gum, patches, sprays, and inhalers. NRT's are helpful, but they are not usually the only thing that you should use to quit smoking. The psycological aspects of smoking should also be treated while you are using NRT's which doubles the chance that a person can quit smoking. NRT's should not be used by people who are pregnant or have heart or circulatory diseases. When using NRT's it is important not to overdose on nicotine because this can damage your cardiovascular health. NRT's can be used as soon as a person stops smoking. There is no type of NRT that is proven to be more effective, basically whichever type of NRT that a person is most comfortable with is the type that they should use. Combinations of NRT's can also be used which will give you a higher dose of nicotine. There are also some medicines that can help you quit smoking. They work by affecting the brain so that it does not want nicotine.Sources:http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp?sitearea=&level=

TobaccoOther types of methods to quitThere are many different ways that a person can quit using tobacco. Some are basic therapies or treatments, while others are pills or pouches that are on the market but have not been approved or reviewed by the FDA.The basic therapies and such include:
Atropine and scopolamine combination therapy: This therapy is described as " Some smoking cessation clinics offer a program using shots of the anticholinergic drugs atropine and scopolamine to help reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms. These drugs are more commonly prescribed for other reasons, such as digestive system problems, motion sickness, or Parkinson's disease. The treatment usually involves shots given in the clinic on one day, followed by a few weeks of pills and wearing patches behind the ear. It may include other drugs to help with side effects as well. Some clinics claim high success rates, but there is no published scientific research to back up these claims. Both atropine and scopolamine are FDA approved for other uses, but they have not been formally studied or approved for help in quitting smoking. Before considering such a program, you may want to ask the clinic about long-term success rates (up to a year). Because these medicines are directed only at the physical aspect of quitting, you may also want to ask if the program includes counseling or other methods aimed at the psychological aspects of quitting." (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#other) People may choose this type because they think that one shot and a couple of pills is quicker than several visits to a therapist for hypnosis or acupuncture.
Hypnosis: This is describe as "an artificially induced trance state resembling sleep, characterized by heightened susceptibility to suggestion." (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hypnosis) A person trying to quit may find this helpful because when they are in the trance like state they are more susceptible to opinion and if someone on the outside is telling them to quit, then they are more likely to listen .
Acupuncture: The dictionary definition for this type of therapy is "a Chinese medical practice or procedure that treats illness or provides local anesthesia by the insertion of needles at specified sites of the body." (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=acupuncture) Also, on the American Cancer Society website it states that "but there is little evidence to support its effectiveness. Acupuncture, when it is done, is typically done on the ears on particular ear sites. Although there is a very weak suggestion that acupuncture might lower the desire for smoking, there still is no solid evidence that it is truly effective as a smoking cessation tool" (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#other)
Laser Therapy/ Cold laser therapy: The American Cancer society describes this as "Cold lasers are sometimes used for acupuncture, with laser beams to stimulate the body's acupoints rather than needles. The treatment is supposed to relax the smoker and release endorphins (naturally-occurring pain relief substances) in the body to simulate the effects of nicotine in the brain, or balance the body's energy to relieve the addiction. Despite claims of success by some cold laser therapy providers, there is no scientific evidence that shows this is an effective method of helping people stop smoking" (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#other) The person trying to quit may prefer this over acupuncture because of a needle issue and a laser sounds better than hypnosis and safer than acupuncture. Even though there is not a high success rate there are those cases that do work and people may be a lot comfortable with the idea of lasers and not needles.
Filters: "reduce tar and nicotine in cigarettes are generally not effective since studies show that smokers who use filters actually tend to smoke more." (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#other) So, don't choose this one because it can cause more severe long and short term effects than the other options.
Smoking deterrents: "such as over-the-counter products that change the taste of tobacco, "stop smoking diets" that curb nicotine cravings, and combinations of vitamins have little scientific evidence to support their claims." (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#other) Some people may prefer this type because it is a basic thing that can be picked up at the local pharmacy. There are also so many commercials for things like these, like patches and gum, and people believe what is said and they enjoy the convenience. There are others that have not been approved or reviewed by the FDA. These include:
Tobacco lozenges and pouches: " Lozenges containing tobacco, (Ariva, Interval) and small, tobacco-containing pouches (Revel, Exalt) are being marketed as alternative ways for smokers to get nicotine in places where smoking is not permitted, rather than as quit smoking aids. The FDA has ruled that these are types of smokeless tobacco, not smoking cessation aids; therefore, the FDA does not have authority over them. There is no evidence that these products can help a person quit smoking" (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#other) People may enjoy these because of their simplicity and convinience, all you have to do is pop one in your mouth like a cough drop and thats it. Also, these can be taken in places where smoking in not allowed.
Nicotine lollipops and lip balms: "some pharmacies made a product called a "nicotine lollipop". These lollipops often contained a product called nicotine salicylate with a sugar sweetener. Nicotine salicylate is not approved for pharmacy use by the FDA. The FDA has warned several pharmacies to stop selling nicotine lollipops and lip balm on the Internet, calling the products "illegal." The FDA also said "the candy-like products present a risk of accidental use by children." (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#other) People may choose these because of their simplicity, they can be used anywhere where smoking is illegal. But families with small children should either not buy them and look for another type, or keep them out of reach where there is no chance that a child can get one.

Quitting Success Rates:When a person wants to quit smoking there are many types of procedures and help that you can go to when wanting to quit. During these steps and procedures, the success rate of actually quiting smoking is very low. About 5% to 16% of people are able to quit smoking for at least 6 months without any medicine to help with withdrawal. 25% to about 33% of people who use medicine for quiting smoking can usually stay clean for a little over 6 months, and going to group therapy can also increase the rates of staying clean. Although the success rates are low, it doesn't mean you shouldn't try them if you really want to quit smoking. When quiting smoking the success rates of other people don't matter as much because in the end all you need is your success rates. How to quit:When considering quiting smoking there are four main goals that you have to achieve to make quitting smoking successful.
Making the decision to quit
Setting a quit date and choosing a quit plan
Dealing with withdrawal
Staying quit (maintenance)During this time, following these steps will take you through the process of quitting cigarette smoking, as soon as you make your decision to quit your off to the best start you could be, and after you set a date, your even better although the hardest part is dealing with the withdrawals you will have family, friend, sugarless gum, and love from everyone being there to support you!

Secondhand SmokeThis type of smoke is a mixture of two types: sidesteam smoke and mainsteam smoke. Sidesteam smoke is smoke that comes from the end of a lighted cigarette, pipe or cigar. Mainstream smoke is the smoke that is exhaled by a smoker. When nonsmokers are exposed to the smoke of a smoker it is called involuntary smoking. These nonsmokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke absorb nicotine and other toxic chemicals just as the smokers do. Why Is It a Problem?Secondhand smoke is known as a “known human carcinogen” a cancer causing agent by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Tobacco smoke contains 4,000 chemical compounds and more than 60 of these compounds are suspected to cause cancer. Secondhand smoke is harmful in many ways, in the United Sates alone, it is responsible each year for:35,000 deaths from heart disease in people who live with smokers3,400 lung cancer deaths in nonsmoking adultsrespiratory problems in nonsmokers, including coughing, chest discomfort and reduced lung functions150,000 to 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections in younger children 18 months of age, which have resulted in 7,500 to 15,000 hospitalizationsSmoking increases the number of severity of asthma attacks in about 200,000 to one million asthmatic children. In a website (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_2X_Secondhand_Smoke-Clean_Indoor_Air.aspit) states that in 2006 US Surgeon General's report reached several important conclusions:  Secondhand smoke causes premature death and disease in children and in adults who do not smoke.  Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), acute respiratory infections, ear problems, and more severe asthma. Smoking by parents causes respiratory symptoms and slows lung growth in their children.  Exposure of adults to secondhand smoke has immediate adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and causes coronary heart disease and lung cancer.  Many millions of Americans, both children and adults, are still exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes and workplaces despite substantial progress in tobacco control.Where is it a Problem? There are three major locations secondhand smoking can occur at are: the workplace, public places, and the home. The workplace is a major issue for secondhand smoke exposure to adults. Since the secondhand smoke from exposure in the workplace has been linked to an increased risk for heart disease and lung cancer among adult nonsmokers.Public places make everyone vulnerable to secondhand smoke exposure in public places, such as restaurants, shopping centers, public transportation, schools, and daycare centers. The home: In the United States, 21 million, or 35% of children live in homes where residents or visitors smoke in the home on a regular basis. Approximately 50% to 75% of children in the United States have detectable levels of cotinine, the breakdown product of nicotine, in their blood. Quitting Smokeless Tobacco
Charlene Rodriguez
Quitting smoking is very hard to do, but possible. The reason it is so hard, is because Tobacco is incredibly addictive. The Nicotine in Tobacco is said to be as addictive as heroine or cocaine. There at two things you must overcome in order to quit. They are to not be physically and psychologically dependent on nicotine.
The effects of Nicotine are very serious. It effects a lot of your body. Parts of yoru body effected by Nicotine are : your heart and blood vessels, your hormonal system, your metabolism and brain. What Nicotine does is makes you have a pleasure feeling. That is what makes you want to use more Nicotine. Eventually your body develops a tolerance and that leads to an increase of the use of nicotine. “Smokeless tobacco delivers a high dose of nicotine”. “Smokeless tobacco constantly produces levels of nicotine higher than those seen with smoking and blood vessels of Nicotine throughout the day are similar among smokers and those who use smokeless tobacco”.
When you quit nicotine you will have Nicotine withdrawals. The withdrawal is both physical and mental. “Physically the body is reacting to the absence of Nicotine. Psychologically, the user is faced with giving up a habit, which is a major change in behavior”. The symptoms of withdrawal are: dizziness, depression, feeling of frustration and anger, irritability, trouble sleeping, trouble concentrating, restlessness, headaches, tiredness, increased appetite. The symptoms can last from a few days to several weeks.
When thinking of quitting, there are many things you should take into consideration. First is social acceptance. It is common you will have bad breath, gum disease and discolored teeth. Secondly, it starts adding up and costing a lot of money. Most importantly though, is setting an example. You don’t want to set a bad example for your children and showing them that smoking is ok.
There are many places to turn to for support while trying to quit. One big source is telephone based programs. You are transferred to trained councilors. You are helped to plan a quitting method. The good thing about this is that, “it doesn’t require transportation or childcare, and its available nights and weekends”. To get help finding a program call ACS at 1-800-ACS-2345.
There is also group counseling. Some important things to take into consideration are: session lengths. The sessions should be at least 20-30 minutes per session. The other thing is the number of sessions. You should have at least 4-7 sessions. The third thing is the number of weeks. The things listed below are things you should avoid in group meetings. “Promise instant, easy success with no effort on your part, using injections or pills with “secret” ingredients, charge a very high fee, are not willing to provide references from people who have taken the class”. One thing you should know though is that the programs have a fairly low overall success rate.
There are other ways to help with Nicotine withdrawals. There is Nicotine gum and Lozenges. “Lozenges allow you to control your dosage and help keep craving at bay”. Its really important if you are pregnant or have a heart disease you should talk to your doctor before taking Nicotine replacements. Others are Bupropion and varencline. Bupropion reduces the symptoms of Nicotine withdrawal. It effects chemicals in the brain that are related to nicotine cravings. Varenciline is a pill you take twice a day. It “interferes with Nicotine receptors in the brain, reduces physical pleasure from Nicotine and helps lesson symptoms”.
People who want to quit have no idea where to begin. The first thing you have to do is make the decision to quit. Set a quit date and choose a quit plan. You have to deal with your withdrawals and staying quit. You should also make a list of your reasons for quitting. Some examples are: “I want to be healthier, I already have problems with my gums/ teeth, and I don’t them to get worse”.
When you are picking a quit day you should pick a specific day within the next month. Or a birthday or anniversary. Some things that prepare you for your quit day are:
“Pick date and mark it on calendar
Tell friends/ family/ coworkers about quit day
Stock upon oral substances
Decide on a plan
Consider seeing your doctor or dentist.

dealing with withdrawalThere are two types of withdrawal from nicotine. They are physical and psychological. The physical types are not life threatening just annoying you can just replace the nicotine to lower the symptoms. They can be limited and you can still get the urge to smoke just because it is a habit like watching TV or eating at certain parts of the day. One way to help fight the urge to smoke is to realize that it is a urge and try to stop it. Some people say they have these symptoms, I’ll just use it to get through this rough spot. Today is not a good day; I’ll quit tomorrow. How bad is tobacco, really? Uncle Harry chewed all his life and he lived to be over 90. You've got to die of something. Life is no fun without smoking. The main part of withdrawal is realizing that it is all in your head and you don't actually have to smoke a cigarette. You can also help yourself by staying away from others that smoke so you feel like you don't have to. You should change your habits and switch from alcohol and coffee to juice and water will help you stay away from cigarettes. And get some exercises instead of taking a coffee break. you something to take the place of the cigarettes like sugarless gum or hard candy, raw vegetables like carrot sticks, or sunflower seeds. Do exercises and other activity's to keep your hands bizzy or take a hot bath. or read a book. Take deep breaths as you would when you were smoking. Whenever you feel the urge try and hold it off for 10 minuets.

Nicotine WithdrawalWhen smokers try to cut back or quit, the lack of nicotine in there system leads to withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal effects both the physical and mental parts of your life. psychologically, the smoker has to give up a habit, which requires willpower. physically, the body reacts to the lack of nicotine. both must be dealt with for the quitting process to be successful.Withdrawal symptoms can include any of the following :Dizziness( not a good idea to paint house)depressionfeelings of frustration and angereasily irritatedinsomnia and/or nightmaresconcentration issuesrestlessnessheadachestiednesseat morethese symptoms can cause a smoker to start smokeing again to restore the nicotine levelsin there bloodstream back to symptomless levels.if a person smokes regularly for a few weeks or longer then quickly stops smokeing or greatly reduces the amount that they smoke withdrawal symptoms will occur. they usually start within a few hours and peak 2or 3 days later. symptoms can last for a few days to several weeks.sourceshttp://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp

milk
What's in the milk group? There are many different foods and drinks that come from milk and they are all considered to be in that food group. A lot of foods however, that are made from milk, lose most of their calcium, and results in having little or none at all. Most often than not, people buy milk, cheese butter, and yogurt. The healthier choice is to get all fat free, or low fat. You can get light ice cream, in a lot of flavors. How much is needed? Like many things, it depends on how much you weigh, how old you are, and who you are. For example, here is a chart that I pulled off of the internet.

vegetable
What’s in the Vegetable Group?Anything that is a vegetable or one hundred percent vegetable juice counts a member of the vegetable group. It does not matter how the vegetable is prepared, it can be chopped, cooked, mashed, or anything else as long as it is one hundred percent vegetable. There are five groups of vegetables, dark green, orange, dry beans and peas, starchy, and other vegetables.
How Many Vegetables do you need? The amount of vegetables that you should eat depends on your height, weight, sex, and how much physical activity that you do.What Counts as a Cup of Vegetables? One cup of raw, cooked, or juiced vegetables or two cups of leafy greens counts a cup from the vegetable group. Why is it important to eat vegetables? There are many health benefits that come from eating vegetables’ in your diet such as reducing the risk for stoke, type 2 diabetes, and coronary heart disease. Eating vegetables helps reduce the risk of mouth, stomach, colon cancer and kidney stones.Vegetables are a great source for nutrients that include potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin E and vitamin C. Vitamin A keeps eyes and skink healthy to fight off infections, vitamin E helps protect vitamin A and fatty acids from cell oxidation (decay) and vitamin C helps heal cuts and wounds.Tips to help you eat vegetables Buying fresh vegetables in season costs less and are more likely to taste better sine they are in their peak of flavor. Keeping frozen vegetables in the freezer allow for an easy meal by placing them in the microwave and heating them up. Add vegetables to you dinner to make the meal seem more interesting. Vitamin B-1 (Thiamine)Thiamine is a very important vitamin because it helps you metabolize your fat, however, it is water soluble, which means that it disintegrates in water. This vitamin is needed to do many things in the body. The vitamin can be made in the body and then stored in the liver.Vitamin B-9 is needed in cell growth and DNA synthesis. Vitamin B-9 is also very important in the formation of red blood cells, amino acids and last but not least energy productions. Along with those it is absolutly vital for creating heme, which is the iron substance in hemoglobin, essentail for oxygen transport. Vitamin B-9 works as a coenzyme in RNA and DNA synthesis. It is also good for digestion and for your nervous system. The vitamin also works to better your mental and emotional health. So it can be used as a treatment for depression and anxiety. Not having enough folic acid (vitamin B-9) can cause diarrhea, heartburn and constipation. Vitamin K is a group of 2-methilo-naphthoquinone derivatives. There are three notable forms of vitamin K, K1 (phytonadione, phylloquinone, phytonactone), K2 (menaquinones), which can be formed by natural bacteria in the intestines, and K3 (menadione), the most active synthetic form of the preparations K3-K7. Vitamin K plays an important role in blood clotting and bone metabolism. High serum concentrations of undercarboxylated osteocalcin and low serum concentrations of vitamin K are associated with lower bone mineral density and increased risk of hip fracture. Vitamin K supplements may improve bone mass in postmenopausal women. Vitamin K prevents calcification of arteries and other soft tissue. Calcification of organs and other soft tissue is an adverse consequence of aging. Vitamin K may play a role in the regulation of blood sugar. The pancreas, which makes insulin, has the second highest amount of vitamin K in the body. Vitamin K's primary function is to regulate normal blood clotting due to its role in the synthesis of prothrombin. Vitamin K supplements improve bone health and reduce risk of bone fractures, particularly in postmenopausal women who are at risk for osteoporosis. Three vitamin-K dependent proteins have been isolated in bone. Higher vitamin K levels correspond to greater bone density, while low levels of vitamin K have been found in those with osteoporosis. In bones, vitamin K mediates the gamma-carboxylation of glutamyl residues on several bone proteins, notably osteocalcin. Osteocalcin is a protein synthesized by osteoblasts (bone forming cells). The mineral-binding capacity of osteocalcin requires vitamin K-dependent gamma-carboxylation of three glutamic acid residues. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin K is 80 mg per day for adult males and 65 mg per day for adult females, and 5 mg/day for the newborn infant. Rich sources of vitamin K include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, spinach and soybeans.Vitamin K deficiency is very rare and occurs when there is an inability to absorb the vitamin from the intestinal tract. Vitamin K deficiency can also occur after prolonged treatment with oral antibiotics. Vitamin K deficiency is often the result of impaired absorption rather than not getting enough in the diet. Prolonged use of antibiotics can also cause a low level of this vitamin because they destroy some of the bacteria in the gut that help to produce vitamin K. Newborns are at risk for vitamin K deficiency. This is because their digestive tracts contain no vitamin K-producing bacteria. Vitamin K deficiency in adults is rare. When it occurs, it is found in people with diseases that prevent the absorption of fat. These diseases include cystic fibrosis, celiac disease, and cholestasis. Symptoms of vitamin K deficiency include easy bruisability, epistaxis, gastrointestinal bleeding, menorrhagia and hematuria. There is no known toxicity associated with high doses of phylloquinone (vitamin K1), menaquinone (vitamin K2), or menadione (vitamin K3) and its derivatives. High intake of vitamin K is not recommended for individuals taking anticoagulant medications such as Warfarin (coumadin).
